GBYS – Denver / North Metro
Liesel Thomas, Guide By Your Side Program Coordinator
Liesel lives in Henderson with her husband, Mike, and three daughters; Sophie (born in 2001), Sarah (born in 2005), and Sylvia (born in 2008). Sophie and Sylvia are profoundly deaf and Sarah is hearing. After Sylvia was born deaf, a genetic test revealed the cause of hearing loss for the two girls is an autosomal genetic mutation called Connexin 26. The Thomas family goal is bilingualism with both girls having bilateral cochlear implants and ASL as a second language.

Dessie Berry, South Metro Parent Guide
Dessie lives in Littleton with her husband Dan and her daughter Roux, born in 2013. Roux experienced a cardiac condition that required a stay in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit ten days after birth, where her hearing was screened. Her hearing loss progressed from mild-to-moderate to now a moderate hearing loss and she has used hearing aids since she was two months old. Dessie has studied two years of ASL with the goal of reaching fluency, and the family is also encouraging feisty and outgoing Roux’s spoken language and listening skills.
